"The Silberman School of Social Work boasts a great diversity not only among its students, but among its professors as well. The staff are supportive and prompt in responses. They challenge students to reach deep and question not only their own ideas but also those of the professors and the literature. During high volume times, answers to emails can be slow, but this is expected of any program. Overall, the Silberman School is a great program that I would recommend to anyone considering social work."

"I have really enjoyed my time as a graduate student at Hunter. I have made great friends and I can always count on my program advisors for help. There are not many cons I can think of except for the commute being a bit far for me. I do use this time to read or study which is great."

"I think as students, we are very fortunate to have the staff and professors to lecture and teach us. Some of them are extremely knowledgeable about their course material, and they assist if students run into any problems."

"Tell us about your college experience. My college experience was fine. I enjoyed my classes and the friends I met. My school was a good fit. I felt it was both challenging and rewarding. My career services was helpful when I was looking for a job which resulted in an internship.Would you get the same degree if you could start over? No, I would have chosen Business. What advice can you offer other students? In school, take the time to go to college fairs to learn about different jobs. If you find a job that interests you speak to your career services advisor to see if they are looking for an intern. Also speak to your education advisor, about what classes will prepare you for that specific industry or role. In college, be focus and work hard but enjoy your experience."

"Tell us about your college experience.I loved Hunter because it introduced me to my major, Community Health Education.Would you get the same degree if you could start over?Yes. I plan to purse a Master's in Public Health (MPH).What advice can you offer other students? While enrolled, complete as many internships that you can to advance your knowledge in the field that interests you. Also, dedicate an efficient amount of time to your job search during your final year. Do not wait until after you graduate."

"I believe that I truly made the right choice in attending the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College. To date, I have only taken one non-matriculated class and the professor was wonderful, understanding and his expertise in the subject was amazing. The faculty staff of the Graduate Admissions office is very informative and attentive to current students and new-coming students. I look forward to attending more classes this fall and obtaining my Masters in Social Work."

"Hunter has been a rewarding experience compared to my first Masters program. Above all, the faulty are the best asset in my program. They are kind and supportive and willing to answer questions to help you make decisions about your future. They are also very understanding and flexible if you are attending part-time and juggling a full-time career."

"My graduate program is wonderful in that it gets you to think. We are constantly being challenge about the way we think and interact with the world. We are taught to question our beliefs which help us to be the best social workers we can be."

  • Degree: Special Education
"The graduate program in Special Education at Hunter College has a wide range of positive aspects. Many of the professors have years of experience in teaching college students, as well as their area of expertise. They make themselves available for their students through email, telephone, and office visits. The curriculum is rigorous and does an excellent job of providing students with the knowledge and experience they need on the job. In particular, Hunter's unique Learning Lab, in the second year of the program, gives students firsthand experience teaching a child. The Hunter student works with the child for an entire year to assess them, create lesson plans for them, and to hone their teaching craft in a real-life setting. There were few cons that I found in the Hunter College Special Education program. Perhaps I would have liked a wider range of elective courses to choose from; the course load was rather fixed and did not allow for much choice. Overall, I would highly recommend this program to anyone pursuing a graduation degree in Special Education. It is an excellent value- affordable price, experienced faculty, and sold curriculum all make the degree what it is."

"Satisfied with my grad program so far. Very interesting professors who understand that they can deliver quality and competitive education to employed educators at a city college."

"My professors and advisors are genuinely interested in having us succeed. The classes and overall material are relevant and practical for the program. Students are provided with multiple opportunities for hands-on teaching experience. The overall environment is a supportive one that allows a free exchange of ideas. Additionally, employment opportunities are frequently provided to students. The main drawback for me about this program is that not enough evening classes are offered at varying times. The majority of the classes are offered at 5pm which can pose a problem if you have a standard 9-5 schedule. However, with respect to quality of education and cost, this program is excellent."

"The Social Work program at Hunter College is one of the most competitive in the country. The professors are experts in the field and have an immense amount of knowledge to impart on their students. The staff at the school are always ready and willing to help students and do so in a gracious manner. It is also one of the most affordable graduate programs in the area, making it much easier for its graduates to develop themselves as professionals without having major financial burdens."

"Because I also have my son in college the college expense is a bit too much at this time, but it is the best I can do.More scholarships should be available to students with families. My school is at the side of the hospital I work with so commuting is to and from school is just the same as getting to and from work. The professors are highly qualified intellectually and in their field of practice and they do their best to transfer that knowledge."

"Hunter has a great framework that they teach to the students. When you first think about social work ; you immediately think clinical practice and helping others. I love the fact the Hunter teaches us how to practice from an Anti-Oppressive framework. When learning how to practice from this framework it will change how the clinician works with the client. The cons of Hunter are the clinical practice lab. They are over crowded and they need to be more structured."

"The pros of the program are that the faculty that teach have worked in the field. What you learn in the classroom you will see out in field placement. A con about this program is the seats available to prospective students. Many qualified students get turned down because of the limited seating."

"I love this early childhood education program. I think it teaches you real life problems and experience. There are a few exceptions though- with certain professors and classes seeming useless and not approaching the program the way the rest of the staff and students do. Overall, I love this program!"
