"It is an extremely valuable use of your time. Studying mathematics I gained skills in problem solving and abstract ways of thinking that are very useful. Also, going to a liberal arts school affords you the option to study a myriad of things."

"This is an 5 program that prepared me well for the job market. Focus on collaboration, field work, and technical writing strengthen the education. Graduates are very competitive."

"The Ethnic Studies major and program is an extremely well rounded and dynamic program. It's a program that was built through the interdisciplinary study of US Government, Ethnicity, Power and Privilege, Class, and Queer & Gender Studies. This program is a great fit for those who are interested in the realm of politics, policy making, social work, law school, teaching, or pursuing a masters in either Gender and Sexuality Studies, Ethnic Studies (such as African Studies, Chicano Studies, Native American Studies, etc), Psychology, Sociology, etc. The professors are very involved in their specialties and many are activists in their own communities. This program was very integral in my development as a Community Activist and developing my passion for Law. I would recommend this program for anyone is passionate about alleviating societal injustices or pursuing a career in the fields of justice such as Law, local and larger scale activism, the justice system, etc."

"The Environment and Community MA program is great. It has really been a wonderful experience to be in classes with people from many different disciplines and ways of life. One thing I don't really enjoy is the Northern CA social life. There is a lot of marijuana and that's not great."

"Great surrounding area with lots of outdoor activities. The town of Arcata is not super exciting. The graduate program is good, although it is a really small school with not a whole lot of staff."

"The area is beautiful and amazing. The town of Arcata can be a little depressing if you don't get out and see the surrounding areas. The school has good professors, but also has some duds."

"I feel the pros of this graduate program is being in an a rural environment, rural is a smaller population and confidentiality is so important to my clients life, and is the bases on weather i get personal information out of them. the cons of this environment is that diversity is limited. So if your a student trying to work with a very complex population, they may not get the full field placement they really want to help with future goals."

"Well the Pros are the ability to work on labor as we can do tasks on the environment. Con's is that it can be really expensive way more then reasonable."

"Looking back I think the education I received from Humboldt State University was really intricate compared to other universities. The local area attracts instructors from all over the world very distinct perspectives that I feel contribute to a very in-depth education. Especially from an international standpoint, HSU promotes a global focus, a focus you can truly feel even though it is a small university. Studying abroad, I met many people who knew this school and its reputation for sustainability as well as the university's focus activism. I think if you think "outside the box" this is a great place to learn"

"HSU has an excellent botany program. The school itself is small and not very well funded (well, it got a large grant not too long ago, but it was all blown on a new stadium), yet somehow it attracts some of the best faculty you can find. It is also one of the few universities to offer courses specialized courses in mycology, soil science and forest pathology, which is what drew me to it. When I applied for grad school at Berkeley and said I had taken classes with Terry Henkel, I was told they'd love to have any student of his. I can't speak for majors outside of the biology department, and any kind of beaurocratic endeavors are like pulling teeth, but a wonderful place to study science. Also, lots of field trips and hands-on learning!"

"The MSW program had a unique course load that was designed to increase skills with rural communities and Indigenous people with. many scholarships available. The only negative is the coastal weather is often foggy, but even that can be escaped by driving inland a few miles to hot weather and great swimming. The redwoods and coast offer have many beautiful areas to explore and spend time in deep contemplation or having a picnic with friends."

"The Masters in Social Work program is challenging, inspiring, and a lot of work. It challenges me to think outside the box, inspires me to learn more and leave the judgments behind, and the amount of work will make life easier when I'm done which allows me to see how far I have gone with my education. HSU is located in a diverse and indigenous region, so the program has a heavy Native American influence, as well as the LGBTQ communities. Some professors do tend to lean heavier on the diversity."

"Humboldt State's Biology Graduate program is highly regarded in the scientific community. Students are able to work one-on-one with excellent professors on cutting edge research. If you are looking for an area with a lively night life, you're better off going somewhere else, but if you love the outdoors and hands-on education, Humboldt State will be a great fit."

"The small town\school is a plus for me as I can have more one on one time with professors and get to know my cohort better. Dynamic conversations and think tank style discussions are a positive as well. Location is amazing, peaceful and nature-oriented, though some find it too closed off and isolated for their tastes. The program is affordable and flexible which I appreciate. All in all, I love HSU."
