"The Marriage and Family Therapy program that I am in is great in preparing students for the licensing exam that is required in order to be licensed to work with New York after the program. I also appreciate and enjoy the work experience that comes with the required internship component of the program. The fact that the program is accredited is an added bonus because any hours that I acquire from the internship while in the program can be used for the hours requirement portion of the license. I do think, however, that the faculty of the program could use better communication and cohesiveness. I know that they have regular faculty meetings, however, I feel like not everyone on the faculty is on the same page in terms of instructing students on correct protocol and expectations in regards to the internship component of the program. This has been my first year starting the internship, and I have found that during the last couple of months, I have been learning what works and what doesn't through trial and error, that when I have reached out to the field coordinator, who is in charge of ensuring students have clients and/or external placements, for clarification on some things, I have been told to refer to the student manual, and that overall, some students who have been in the program for 3 years or more have not exactly followed procedures. I think from a professional standpoint for a program that is training students to become professional, licensed therapists, it is only fair that everyone, faculty included, is on the same page in terms of expectations for students running the internship program, showing students the equipment, where files are located, which forms to fill out and exactly how to fill them out to avoid confusion. It seems like too many people in the program assume that since it is a graduate program, and we are all adults, that we shouldn't be held by the hand through the process. However, a simple overview from the beginning would avoid unnecessary repetition of information on their part, and would ensure that students are following MFT protocol instead of missing steps and creating an opportunity for legal liability from clients. Because of the cons of the program that I have recently experienced, I feel like enrolling in the program in the first place may not have been the best idea when the staff doesn't have everything organized and some do not demonstrate the willingness to work towards a more organized, professional environment for all. The only problem is resigning from the program at this point in the game means a waste of money in the amount of loans that I have already taken out. Fortunately, this career path is truly my passion, and I am opting to turn this into a learning experience and overcoming this small obstacle in order to realize my dreams."
