My experience at Hobart and William Smith Colleges was about finding the diamonds in the rough. While it largely was a place where I did not feel prideful, I was able to find resources that provided me with growth and stability as a student. This was true for academics, friends, and teachers. In academics, there were certain classes where I felt empowered, challenged, and respected. Read More I passed by, the teachers who supported the most disruptive and problematic male students while shaming the international female students who needed the most assistance, and the hugely problematic coordinate system in every aspect of campus life. Contrastingly, there were professors that were so fantastic that I sought out their classes as electives purely to have them as teachers again. There were classrooms where a community of students and teachers would spend free time together discussing theories in a safe and academically-passionate space. There were students who became my closest lifelong friends, initially over a shared resistance to campus culture. HWS needs a new student body, a thorough weeding out of traditional types and policies, and an updated culture, but it has great potential and should be considered a place where one can excel if they find their own areas where they can grow and achieve.
