"During my time at CSULA, I've been able to take my research to the next level and boost my CV despite the fact I study primates and my advisor studies caves. The beauty of this dynamic department is they offer a four field approach and if you have an open mind and determination, the resources are limitless. CSULA offers the best education for the money and the anthropology department deserves it's spot at the top of the list. In a recent TIME article, CSULA was ranked in the top 25 universities in the country for the value of education. If you are willing to go a little above and beyond and apply for scholarships and grants, your time spent here will be even more amazing. Two personal examples - I've been able to present my research at the 112th Annual Meeting of the American Anthropological Association's in Chicago Il and I will present research this summer in Hanoi Vietnam at the International Primatological Society Congress. I've only been able to do this because the anthropology department rewards students hard work. This is the only institution I've known to not only prepare students but also acknowledge their accomplishments. In just over a year at CSULA, I've been awarded with the Hearst Trustee Award, Phi Kappi Phi Honor Society, Golden Eagle Award of Excellence, Outstanding Oral Presentation in the 22nd Annual CSULA Student Research Competition, Theresa A. Mike Scholarship, Graduate Equity Fellowship, Anna Bing Arnold Award, George P. Smith Memorial Award, Faculty Wives Special Fund, RSCA Fund to Support Research and Creative and Travel Support for Student Presentations. I am very thankful for this recognition and hope to continue building my career and enter a Ph.D. program next year. I will always take pride knowing I was part of a great program at CSULA."

"Professors are very helpful and they really know what they're talking about. You have to seek counseling and know all the right questions to ask."

"There are a lot of people on campus that are willing to help you out with any questions or support that you may need. The down side is that you have to seek this help and be aware of all the upcoming deadlines."

"Great professors who care about students doing well. I highly recommend this program- I've learned so much and I feel well-prepared for my future in speech-language pathology. As for the university itself it's more of a commuter school, so the social campus life isn't great."

"The School Based Family program at CSULA is extremely beneficial in creating a program with direct client experience, which is usually not offered for first year graduate students. However, tuition prices rise each quarter and it can get expensive quickly."

"Pros: Much more affordable program compared to a private institution or UC. Night time courses allow the working individual to balance their schedule. Cons: Limited courses to take that fill op quickly. It also appears that last minute changes to schedules or other administrative tasks tend to happen. Pro for their flexibility, Con for being inconsistent."

"Pros: CSULA seems to have programs that are not very common or somewhat new to their fields. For example, I was accepted into the Forensic Anthropology program and although this is a very popular subject, there are very few programs dedicated to this field. In addition, the staff at individual departments are super friendly (although financial aid and housing are fairly rude) I feel very comfortable speaking to department staff and my professors are extremely relaxed and willing to talk or help me with my questions. Safety-wise, for being located in notorious East LA, the school and the immediate surrounding area is actually very safe. The Campus Security offers and encourages students to use their escort service where someone will drive or walk you to your car, class or dorm. The school has its own train and bus station...so access to public transportation is great. Its even relatively easy to get from campus to the airport. Cons: I'm not sure if the school is new to the whole 'internet' thing or if they are in the middle of switching over to a new system...but some of the departments have multiple websites, fake websites, or are non-existent. Technology-wise the school is fairly confusing and needs a lot of work. While the departments generally have their stuff together, I am still finding myself having to jump through various hoops from the school itself even after my first term."

"I was impressed with the way the faculty answers your question and give you sincere advise on how to succeed. I do not not know of any cons yet because I haven't encountered any problem. Overall, I feel secured and I predict that the grad program will be of quality."

"The pros of my graduate program are that teachers are easily accessible via email and in person. Teachers often share their own experiences from when they taught at the secondary level and discussions are mostly student lead with teachers as facilitators. The only con that I have is that there wasn't enough support for teachers pursuing a credential in mathematics besides the support I received from the professor in my methods course. Teachers mainly focused and provided strategies that revolved around English and History lesson plans."

"I like that the program has a tight-knit feeling. Some professors are very supportive and very approachable. Some of the cons are the following: 1) too much content packed in one quarter, 2) have to go to off campus lectures if you want to learn about updated therapy ideas, 3) the department could use a facelift"

"I am just starting the Graduate Program for Special Education so I am not to sure of any cons. To get into the program was an easy process because of the help of the advisors. They showed me what I needed to do and showed me how to do it. They were always open to talk and give me information when I needed it. They worked with me to come up with a program plan, and let me know different ways that I could attack it to finish up the program."

"The graduate program at Cal State LA is small and allows for more time with the students to discuss and really delve into art and research. I also really love that is a very versatile graduate program. The cons of a such a small program, however, is to be noticed among other programs, we have to be careful not be an afterthought."
